Just hours after the talks began, the United States announced that it had imposed new sanctions on Iran and its oil industry, including 14 ships in Iran's oil fleet.
Oman also acted as a mediator between Iran and the United States during last year's nuclear talks. Those negotiations were abruptly interrupted in June after the United States sided with Israel in the twelve-day war against Iran.
