The two archenemies, Iran and the United States, expressed mildly positive views about Friday's meeting.

"It looks like Iran is very keen to make a deal," Trump told reporters aboard the US presidential plane.

Trump also warned of "serious consequences" if Iran does not agree to a new deal on its nuclear program. He said the parties will meet again "early next week."

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi told Iranian state television after the negotiations that it was "a very good start."

Shaking hands

In an interview with Al Jazeera after the talks, Araghchi emphasized that there is a long way to go, that it takes time to build trust between the parties, and that Iran must be allowed to continue enriching uranium.

"Not even through bombings could they destroy our capability. We are ready to reach a reassuring agreement on enrichment," Araghchi said, according to an excerpt published on his Telegram channel.

Iran's foreign minister denied that a date has been set for the next round of talks, but added that both parties agree that they should take place soon.

Although the negotiations were indirect, an opportunity arose to shake hands with the American delegation, Araghchi said.

Warns: Then we attack

Just hours after the talks began, the US announced new sanctions against Iran and the Iranian oil industry, including 14 ships in the oil fleet.

Iran issued new warnings about what would happen if the US attacked Iran. Araghchi admitted that Iran cannot reach the US mainland.

"But we will attack their bases in the region," he said, referring to Iran's vicinity.

Oman also acted as a mediator between Iran and the United States during last year's nuclear talks. Those negotiations were abruptly interrupted in June after the United States sided with Israel in the twelve-day war against Iran.
