US Midterm Elections Begin as Democrats Aim to Take Control of Congress from Trump’s Republicans

The first polling stations are now opening in the United States. On Tuesday, 245 million eligible Americans can make their voices heard as the country goes to the midterm elections. Control of Congress is at stake. But the election is just as much about President Donald Trump.

Pretend I’m on the ballot.

That has been Donald Trump’s message to voters throughout the election campaign.

The message also seems to be mobilising the opposition. Millions of voters will flock to the polls across the country today, and according to CNN, more than 57 million eligible Americans have already cast their ballots.

It’s not unusual for the incumbent president to face headwinds in a midterm election - quite the opposite. In almost every midterm election in modern times, the president’s party has lost seats in Congress. And if the latest opinion polls are to be believed, it looks like there will be a “blue wave” - a Democratic victory this year as well.

But the polls have been wrong before, such as in 2016, when Donald Trump won the presidential election against Hillary Clinton.

To take control of Congress, the Democrats need to win three seats in the House of Representatives and four in the Senate.

On Monday, President Trump concluded his intensive campaign tour with a speech at the Reflection Pool at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.

His previously confident attitude seemed to have waned somewhat:

“We made a very good attempt,” Trump said.
