"The attack is aimed at further weakening Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and to swiftly punish the Revolutionary Guard forces that carried out attacks on US soldiers in Jordan last night," the US military command Centcom wrote on X shortly after midnight.
Earlier this weekend, the United States announced that two American soldiers had been killed - the first since fighting resumed on July 7 - and that a third American was missing after “Iranian missile and drone attacks” on Jordan.
Bangs in multiple places
The Iranian regime-linked news agencies Fars and Tasnim reported overnight Sunday on US attacks on the city of Sirik, located on the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran. Explosions have also been heard in, among other places, Bandar Abbas, a city that has been repeatedly attacked in the past week.
Hours after the attacks began, Iran announced retaliatory strikes on two US bases in Kuwait. In a statement carried on state television, the military said it had carried out “large-scale kamikaze drone attacks on the US military’s ammunition depot at Camp Udairi, as well as the Patriot radar system and air surveillance radar at Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait.”
Iran: Trump's signature worthless
Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei threatened on Saturday with "unforgettable attacks" if the United States does not stop its repeated attacks. He also called - through a proxy - US President Donald Trump's signature "useless."
A few hours before Khamenei's statement, the country's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced that Iran was no longer implementing the memorandum of understanding signed between the US and Iran a month ago.
A total of 16 American soldiers have lost their lives since the war started in February, according to the AP.
