US ends Department of Education agreements protecting transgender students

The agreements were concluded with five school districts and one university in the United States.

They meant that schools were required by federal law to train employees to respect students' preferred names and pronouns and to allow students to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity.

This comes after the Department of Education - under the Obama and Biden administrations - expanded the interpretation of a federal law that prohibits gender discrimination in the education system to also apply to transgender people and gay people.

However, the Trump administration has repeatedly penalized schools that have accommodated students' needs based on gender identity, the AP wrote.
