US Electronics Tariff Exemptions Are Temporary, Warns Trade Minister

American electronics giants breathed a sigh of relief on Friday when the US government exempted electronics from tariffs against the rest of the world. But Trade Minister Howard Lutnick is now warning that the exemptions are only temporary, reports ABC News.

Howard Lutnick tells the TV channel that electronics imported to the USA will receive separate customs duties within "a month or two", and that the products will fall into the category of semiconductors.

We must have semiconductors, we must have data chips and we must have solar panels – and they must be manufactured in the USA. We cannot be dependent on Southeast Asia, says Lutnick.

In a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump writes that "it's not about any exception from the tariffs" announced on Friday, but that these products are covered by already existing 20-percent tariffs.

Commerce Minister Lutcnick says that the White House will introduce a tariff model to encourage semiconductor and pharmaceutical companies to move their production to the USA.

American Apple, which manufactures its phones, computers, and tablets in China, has fallen heavily on the stock exchange since the tariffs against China were raised at the beginning of March and then shock-raised at the beginning of April.

According to the analysis firm Rand China Research Center, the exceptions from tariffs on electronics account for around 390 billion dollars (approximately 3,800 billion kronor) in American imports per year, writes Bloomberg.
