The tariffs were announced in February after the president's previous tariff regime was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Federal Trade Commission ruled that the 1970s law that Trump invoked to impose the tariffs could not be applied for that purpose.
The court's decision effectively and immediately blocked the Trump administration from enforcing the tariffs against the two individual companies and the state of Washington that were behind the lawsuit. The ruling can be appealed to a higher court.
In any case, the current tariffs will only apply until the end of July, unless they are extended by Congress.
Corrected: In a previous version, there was an incorrect time indication regarding when the tariffs were introduced.
