The Trump administration has appointed Alexus Grynkewich, a general in the US Air Force, as the new so-called Saceur, commander of NATO in Europe.
Since the alliance's founding, an American has held the position, but since Trump's presidency, uncertainty has reigned as to whether this should continue.
It had previously been speculated that the US would leave the role as a step in a reduced American military engagement in Europe, but that will not be the case now.
Grynkewich has been approved by NATO's 32 member states according to a statement from the alliance. He will take over from Christopher Cavoli.
