Uruguay has approved a law that legalizes euthanasia. The country is thus joining a handful of other countries where seriously ill patients can legally receive help to end their lives.

20 of 31 present in the senate voted for the law proposal after a ten hour long debate on the issue. The proposal was approved by the lower house in August.

The law means that adult persons who are citizens or live in Uruguay who have the mental capacity to make such a decision, and are in the final stage of an incurable disease that causes them suffering, can receive euthanasia.
