As part of measures to reverse the trend, the French government has set up a new fund that offers compensation to growers who are making a loss if they uproot their vines.
It must be done so that the other growers can protect their value, Macron said during a visit to the major wine fair Wine Paris on Monday.
The country's wine sector suffers from problems with overproduction, caused by, among other things, reduced demand due to changing drinking habits, fierce competition and export problems.
Vineyard closures are mainly focused in areas in southwestern France where less popular low-priced wines are produced.
