The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 0.2 percent and the broad S&P 500 index rose 0.1 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 0.2 percent.
Among the losers were some of the index-heavy companies known as “the magnificent seven.” Alphabet, the parent company of search giant Google, fell 2.0 percent and electric car manufacturer Tesla lost 3.7 percent.
Travel site Expedia, on the other hand, rose sharply after presenting an interim report in which profits exceeded market forecasts. The stock surged 17.6 percent.
On a weekly basis, the three most important indexes fell for the first time in a month, the S&P 500 by 1.6 percent, the Dow Jones by 1.2 percent and the Nasdaq by 3.0 percent.
