On Friday evening, the Premier League season kicks off with Manchester United against Fulham. But then United back Luke Shaw will not be present. The 29-year-old injured himself during a preseason training session and will miss the initial matches.
Now, Danish club legend Peter Schmeichel is directing strong criticism at the left back, who went to the European Championship despite his physical status not being at the top.
Last time Luke Shaw played (for United) was in February and yet he went to the European Championship. Now he's injured again, and he's so important for us, says Schmeichel to BBC Radio Live 5 and continues:
He's a Manchester United player first and foremost. It's us who pay him. He should focus on Manchester United and not his national team.
United has several injury concerns in the backline, and during Saturday's Community Shield, Lisandro Martinez, who normally is a center back, was forced to play on the left back position.
The team's striker, Rasmus Højlund, is also injured.
