Since all 24 unemployment insurance funds are part of the same IT system, all of them are affected by the outage, which was caused by a major system update during the past long weekend.
The upgrade essentially means replacing the entire technical platform. After a successful launch over the weekend, the system began to malfunction on Monday, with another outage on Tuesday, says Johan Ahlgren, communications manager at Sweden's unemployment insurance funds.
Those who reported to their unemployment insurance fund during the weekend – which is the most common – will receive their payment as usual on Thursday.
"But to collect reports that came in a little later, we have decided on an extra payment day on Friday," says Johan Ahlgren.
Extra payments
It is unclear how many people were affected by the technical glitch.
"What we can conclude is that it is basically the same volume that was reported this weekend as a week ago, so there should not be such a large proportion that was unable to report. Should it still turn out that many people report late, we have the opportunity to initiate additional payments," says Ahlgren.
People shouldn't have to worry about waiting a month for the next payment.
"If you are expecting money on Thursday but it doesn't arrive, you should receive it on Friday."
Forecast missing
There is currently no forecast for when the problem will be fixed.
"We are handling this and trying to find a solution so the systems can function as intended as soon as possible."
Around four million people are members of an unemployment fund, according to Sweden's unemployment funds. Since new rules for the unemployment fund came into effect in October 2025, the benefit is calculated and paid monthly.
