The UN Security Council has voted in favor of a resolution supporting a Moroccan plan for the disputed territory of Western Sahara. “Historic” – according to Morocco’s King Mohammed VI.

The plan, which was first presented in 2007, is for Western Sahara to become self-determining – but under Moroccan sovereignty.

Western Sahara is an area claimed by both Morocco and the Polisario independence movement. The conflict began after the Spanish colonial power left the region in 1974.

Algeria, which supports Polisario, opposes the plan and refused to participate in the vote.

Previous UN attempts to resolve the dispute have failed. The Security Council has previously called for a broad agreement between the parties, but has now swung around and supported Morocco's plan – at the initiative of the Trump administration.

According to Morocco's King Mohammad VI, Donald Trump has "paved the way for a final settlement in the conflict."
