Cambodia has demanded an immediate ceasefire – unconditional – and we also urge a peaceful solution to the conflict, says Cambodia's UN ambassador Chhea Keo after the meeting in New York.

The clashes between the countries broke out during the night against Thursday – after five Thai soldiers were injured in a mine explosion the day before. Battles have taken place in at least six locations in a disputed border area between Thailand and Cambodia, according to the Thai Ministry of Defense.

Thailand declared a state of martial law in eight districts along the border with Cambodia on Friday, but has said it is open to talks, possibly with the help of Malaysia, according to the country's Foreign Ministry.

We are ready, if Cambodia wants to solve this issue through diplomatic channels, bilaterally, or even through Malaysia, so we are ready to do it. But so far, we have not received any response, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura earlier.

Malaysia is currently the chairman of the regional cooperation ASEAN, where both Thailand and Cambodia are members.

Thai air raids

Both sides have shot at each other and also fired artillery and rockets. Thailand has carried out air raids.

The fighting resumed early on Friday, according to authorities in the Otar Meanchey province in Cambodia. AP's reporters in the area report that artillery fire has been heard.

According to Thailand, one soldier and 13 civilians, including children, have been killed on the Thai side. Several soldiers and civilians have also been injured.

138,000 Thais in four provinces bordering Cambodia have been evacuated, according to Thailand's Ministry of the Interior.

From Cambodia's side, it is reported that a 70-year-old man has died and at least five civilians have been injured. Over 4,000 people have been forced to flee from villages along the border.

Accuse each other

Both countries accuse each other of having shot first, in the bloodiest battles between the countries in a decade.

Sporadic violent incidents have occurred over the past 15 years. This year, the relationship between the countries has deteriorated significantly since May, when a Cambodian soldier was shot dead at the border.
