The Security Council was again called to a crisis meeting on Sunday, after Iran requested one. The decision was made by Guyana, which holds the council's rotating chairmanship in June.
UN chief Guterres said at the meeting on Sunday evening that civilians must be protected and the parties must return to diplomatic negotiations. He also demanded that Iran immediately allow inspectors from the UN's atomic energy agency IAEA to inspect nuclear facilities.
Furthermore, Guterres demanded that maritime security must be maintained, in a direct comment on threats of military action in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in his opening speech.
This is the third time the Security Council, at the UN headquarters in New York, meets during the ongoing conflict.
