The American first lady will lead a meeting focusing on "children, technology and education in conflict areas", topics that, according to the White House, are close to Melania Trump's heart.
The work is normally handled by UN ambassadors, and AP reports this is the first time a presidential spouse has led the Security Council.
The United States holds the presidency of the Security Council during the month of March, and the decision that Melania Trump would lead the meeting was made before the United States and Israel's attack on Iran.
When asked whether her participation is positive for the UN, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said:
This shows the importance the US places on the Security Council.
Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the UN and the United States is behind on payments to the organization, which has created a financial crisis for the UN.
