Iran has executed at least 841 people this year, according to the UN, which sees a sharp increase in the number of executions in the country.

UN condemns the executions and believes that Iran systematically uses the death penalty as a tool for intimidation and oppression of dissenters.

Only in July, Iranian authorities executed 110 people. This corresponds to more than twice as many people as were executed in July last year, says the UN spokesperson for human rights, Ravina Shamdasani, in a statement.

UN has previously urged Iran to stop using the death penalty.

Iran has defended the use of the death penalty by saying that it is only used for the most serious crimes. Usually, people are executed by hanging at dawn.

Only China carries out more executions than Iran in the world, according to Amnesty International.
