The abuses in al-Fashir, Sudan, in October could have been prevented, the UN says.

"My office has been warning of the risk of mass abuses in the besieged town of al-Fashir for more than a year. But our warnings were ignored," said UN human rights chief Volker Türk.

The capture of al-Fashir by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in October was followed by reports of massacres, torture, sexual violence and abuse. Thousands of people were killed and tens of thousands displaced, Volker Türk notes.

He warns that similar abuses could now occur in Kordofan. In the past two weeks alone, around 90 civilians have been killed in the region by drone strikes, according to Türk.

Sudan's civil war, which has raged since April 2023, has forced almost eleven million people to flee and pushed several regions toward starvation and famine.
