Poor sanitation, water shortages and hunger are the daily realities for those remaining in the city of al-Fashir in civil-war-torn Sudan.

The capture of el-Fashir by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in October was followed by reports of massacres, torture, sexual violence and abuse.

According to AFP, satellite images indicate mass graves in the city.

When the UN gained access to the city after almost two years, its assessment was bleak.

"People are living in very primitive conditions, under plastic tarpaulins, without sanitation and without water. These are very undignified and unsafe conditions for these people," says Denise Brown, the UN's humanitarian coordinator in Sudan.

From a humanitarian perspective, el-Fashir is "the epicenter of human suffering," she continues.

The bloody civil war between Sudan's regular army and the RSF broke out in April 2023. The war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced 12 million people, leading the UN to classify the conflict as the world's worst humanitarian crisis at present.
