"Without immediate funding, the last food aid to the 240,000 neediest refugees will be distributed in September," write the UN agencies WFP and UNHCR.

It is about a “lifeline for hundreds of thousands who are already living on the border,” they add.

Around 3,000 people are reported to be arriving from Sudan each week in search of food, shelter and safety. In addition, food assistance for around 180,000 internally displaced people is at risk of running out by October, according to the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

In total, around 7.8 million people are considered to be at risk of acute food insecurity in South Sudan, and 2.2 million children are acutely malnourished.
