"On Tuesday, 571 local employees, who are outside Gaza, were informed that they are being separated from their service with immediate effect," the spokesperson wrote in an email to AFP.
For over seven decades, the UN relief agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) has provided people in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Jordan and Syria with emergency aid and support in a range of areas.
But, according to the spokesperson, contributions to the agency's work have plummeted amid ever-increasing criticism from Israel, leading to an "unprecedented financial crisis."
Israel has accused UNRWA employees of having ties to Hamas and of participating in the attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Nine employees have been dismissed, while the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ) has found that Israel has not presented any evidence.
UNRWA has around 30,000 employees.
