A high-ranking official in Ukraine confirms that the country has fired Atacms missiles at targets in the Bryansk region of Russia. The target was a military facility near Karachev.
The facility was successfully destroyed, according to another Ukrainian source to BBC.
Russia also confirms the attack, but claims that five of the missiles were shot down. The sixth allegedly hit a military area, but in pieces. The only damage that occurred was a small fire, according to the Moscow regime.
Russian territory
The location is approximately 13 miles from the border, which means that Ukraine has used donated missiles for an attack so deep into Russian territory for the first time.
The US is said to have given a long-awaited green light for attacks with long-range weapons, primarily Atacms, into Russia. However, it is unclear how many such weapons Ukraine has available. US President Joe Biden has not confirmed the decision, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky chose not to comment on the Atacms attack at a press conference in Kyiv.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov sent a warning of revenge when he held a press conference during the ongoing G20 meeting in Brazil.
We see this as a qualitative new phase in the West's war against Russia, and we will respond accordingly.
"Read the nuclear doctrine"
Lavrov referred to the new doctrine on nuclear weapons signed into law by President Vladimir Putin.
I hope they (Western countries) read it in its entirety, said Lavrov.
Russia has previously accused the US of escalating the war by providing personnel to program missiles and for maintenance, in addition to donating the missile system to Ukraine.
