Parubij was shot dead on the open street around lunchtime on Saturday. Information in Ukrainian media claims that he was killed with multiple shots fired by a shooter on an electric bicycle.
In a post on X President Volodymyr Zelenskyj calls the incident a "terrible murder".
"All necessary forces and means are being used in the investigation and in the search for the murderer", he writes and sends condolences to Parubij's loved ones.
A murder investigation has been initiated, says Ukraine's prosecutor general, according to AFP. No one has been arrested yet.
Parubij was the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, between 2016 and 2019. Before that, he served as the head of Ukraine's National Security Council.
Parubij also played a prominent role in the so-called Euromaidan protests in Ukraine in 2014, writes The Kyiv Independent. The protest movement, which advocated for a rapprochement with the EU, brought down the pro-Russian then President Viktor Yanukovych.
Andrij Parubij was 54 years old.
