The Kirishi oil refinery in northwestern Russia is one of the country's largest. It began to partially burn after wreckage from a downed drone fell. No one has been injured, according to Russian officials.
Ukraine's drone command has confirmed the attack on the refinery, which is estimated to account for 6.4 percent of Russia's total oil production. The reports come just hours after Ukrainian drones were reported to have hit another Russian oil refinery in the republic of Bashkortostan and caused a fire and "minor damage".
Three and a half years into the Russian war of aggression, Ukraine has stepped up its attacks on Russian energy facilities. Russia's oil production is an important part of the country's war economy. US President Donald Trump promised on Saturday "significant sanctions" against Russia if NATO countries stop buying Russian oil and also impose sanctions.
