Ukraine’s SBU officials implicated in alleged bribery scheme, anti-corruption agencies say

A “criminal group” has systematically bribed high-ranking Ukrainian law enforcement officials, the country’s anti-corruption agency Nabu reports.

The bribes were allegedly intended to protect criminal activities involving fraudulent call centres, The Kyiv Independent reports.

According to Nabu and Sapo, an anti-corruption unit within the prosecutor's office, “high-ranking” officials from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the police and the prosecutor's office are involved.

On Wednesday morning, searches were carried out at the homes of several SBU officials, according to Ukrainian media.

The group’s exposure is part of an investigation into a larger corruption scandal shaking Ukraine. In September, Nabu and Sapo said they had uncovered a money-laundering operation linked to the Prosecutor General's Office, leading to the resignation of then-Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko and his subsequent flight from the country.
