During the month of June, Russia's invasion forces have both lost and taken Ukrainian territory, according to data from the American think tank ISW, which AFP has reviewed.
They have taken control of a few dozen square kilometers, especially in Kharkiv in the northeast. But during the same period, Ukraine has pushed them back from an almost equally large area further south, in Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk.
Russia's advance has clearly slowed over the year. April was the first month in two and a half years that the aggressor lost more ground than it gained. In April and May, they retreated a combined total of more than 400 square kilometers.
