The Supreme Court in the United Kingdom has ruled that a woman is a person who has been biologically born as a girl.
Five Supreme Court judges have unanimously decided that "the terms 'woman' and 'sex' in the Equality Act refer to a biological woman", announces Judge Patrick Hodge.
The dispute has been between the women's rights group For Women Scotland (FWS) and the Scottish government. The ruling means that a trans person with a certificate stating they are a woman will not be considered a woman.
In a law adopted by the Scottish parliament in 2018, it is stated that half of the boards of Scottish public authorities shall be women. This included trans people in the definition of women.
