In May 2022, Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea after the British government issued sanctions against the Russian oligarch. This was due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Abramovich's ties to Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

The approximately 32.5 billion kronor, which the deal was worth, were then placed on a blocked bank account so that Abramovich could not access them, and according to the government, the money was intended to go to the victims in Ukraine.

Abramovich, in turn, claimed that the money should be divided, and that it would also go to the victims.

No solution has been found so far, since Abramovich still owns the money legally, and now Britain's Finance Minister Rachel Reeves and Foreign Minister David Lammy are threatening to take legal action to resolve the conflict over the money.

"The door for negotiations is still open, but we are prepared to take this to court if necessary," the two ministers say and continue:

"We are extremely frustrated that a solution has not been possible to find yet."

Abramovich owned Chelsea between 2003 and 2022.
