Excavators and chainsaws are used to dig up the remains of victims of the second typhoon to hit the Philippines in a short time. At least 18 people have died in Fung-Wong's wake.

Super Typhoon Fung-Wong made landfall on Sunday, just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi caused more than 220 deaths and widespread devastation. 1.4 million people were evacuated, mainly from coastal areas where the water level rose rapidly. Several of the dead drowned and there were also reports of people being swept away by landslides.

Some areas, including in the province of Isabela in the northeast, are still cut off from the outside world, according to a spokesperson for the civil defense.

Clearing roads, restoring electricity and telephone lines, and helping people get home from shelters is expected to take several weeks.
