Two Swedish citizens are charged with terrorism and attempted terrorism for throwing hand grenades at the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen in October 2024.

The hand grenades exploded at a residential building near the embassy. No one was injured in the explosion, but there was extensive damage to one building.

According to the Danish prosecutor, the Swedes "in concert and after prior planning and agreement with one or more unknown accomplices" are said to have transported five hand grenades and thrown two of them at the embassy.

But instead of the intended target, the hand grenades hit a residential building, the Danish prosecution authority writes in a press release.

"We assess that the defendants threw the hand grenades with the aim of hitting the Israeli embassy, and that the attack under the circumstances is to be considered an act of terrorism," says State Prosecutor Lise-Lotte Nilas, according to the press release.

They are also charged with attempted murder and attempted endangerment of another. The latter crime is considered serious by the prosecution because they attempted to endanger the people who were monitoring the embassy.

The public prosecutor will request imprisonment and that the two Swedes, 18 and 20 years old, be expelled from Denmark with a permanent entry ban.

The two Swedes have been in custody in Denmark since the beginning of October 2024. Their position on the criminal charges is not stated in the press release. One of them is also suspected of the shooting at the Israeli embassy in Stockholm.
