The suspected crime was committed between June 26 and July 1 this year in Solna, according to the arrest warrants submitted to the court. The individuals were arrested on Wednesday, just before 2:30 p.m.
The detention hearings will be held at Stockholm District Court on Friday afternoon, starting at 1 p.m.
"What I can say is that two people are suspected of illegal intelligence activities against Sweden, a serious crime. They have been deprived of their liberty and have now been requested to be detained by prosecutors," says Gabriel Wernstedt, press spokesperson for the Security Service.
Facts: Illegal intelligence activities
According to Section 19:10 of the Swedish Penal Code, "anyone who, with the intention of passing information to a foreign power secretly or using fraudulent means, either conducts activities to acquire information whose disclosure to a foreign power could cause harm to Sweden's security or participates in such activities" shall be convicted of unlawful intelligence activities against Sweden.
Illegal intelligence activities can also be directed against individuals rather than the state of Sweden.
The penalty for illegal intelligence activities is imprisonment for a maximum of two years. If the crime is considered serious, imprisonment for between six months and four years applies.
