115 people died when an eight-story building in the city of Kahramanmaras in southeastern Turkey collapsed when an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck at dawn on February 6, 2023. It was one of several buildings that collapsed in the residential area, where a total of 1,400 people died.
The two men had leading positions in the company that built the apartment building and were sentenced to 18 years and eight months in prison for "causing death and injury through deliberate negligence".
Four more people were prosecuted. Three were acquitted due to lack of evidence, while the fourth was put on trial in absentia.
The earthquake killed over 53,500 people in Turkey and nearly 6,000 people in neighboring Syria.
