Six people suspected of involvement in an economic crime ring linked to two municipal companies in Sundsvall were released after questioning. The suspicions remain, said Angelica Vallgren, press officer at the Swedish Economic Crime Agency (EBM).

"The evidence is secure. Now we are going through what was collected in yesterday's raids," she adds.

P4 Västernorrland was first to report that the suspects had been released, as they were no longer considered likely to be able to influence the investigation.

Serious crimes

The suspicions concern serious fraud and serious accounting violations. However, EBM does not want to state which municipal companies are involved or what roles the suspects have had, citing the confidentiality of the preliminary investigation.

"What I can say is that there are two municipal companies," says Angelica Vallgren.

One of the six suspects, who was taken in for questioning in Stockholm, was given a statement of suspicion after questioning. However, that person had no connection to the two municipal companies, but was connected to the case itself.

Two municipal companies

The other five suspects, all with connections to the two municipal companies, were arrested and charged in connection with a dawn raid on Sundsvall's municipal building on Tuesday morning.

The dawn raid was carried out to secure evidence in the form of email conversations on the municipality's servers.

"Some are suspected of being accessories to the crime and some are suspected of the crime itself. But I can't go into who is who," says Angelica Vallgren.

The criminal charges for all of them remain gross accounting fraud and gross fraud, she adds.

There are currently no further suspects in the economic crime case, according to Vallgren.
