Petter Stenberg (S), chairman of the municipal holding company Stadsbacken, is one of the suspects. Another is Anita Bdioui (S), chairman of the municipal company Sundsvall Logistikpark, the Workers' Municipality of Sundsvall writes in a press release.
The suspicions relate to gross fraud and gross accounting fraud during the years 2024-2025.
"Both Petter Stenberg and Anita Bdioui deny any wrongdoing," the Workers' Municipality writes.
Taking a break from political duties
Both have "chosen to take a break from their political duties, pending the continued investigation."
"We obviously take the suspected crimes seriously. However, we need to know more about the allegations to determine whether and if so, what measures need to be taken," writes the deputy chair of the municipal board, Lisa Tynnemark (S), in a comment.
Stadsbacken AB is a municipal holding company, while Sundsvall Logistikpark AB is responsible for coordinating the development of the transport system in the municipality.
Dawn raid on municipal building
The information about the involvement of S politicians comes after all six suspects in the case were released after questioning, as there is no longer considered to be a risk that they could influence the investigation.
The suspicions remain, says Angelica Vallgren, press officer at the Swedish Economic Crime Agency (EBM).
The evidence is secure. Now we are reviewing what was collected in yesterday's raids, she adds.
The preliminary investigation has been ongoing "for some time" and EBM - which has not named either the suspects or the companies - is indicating that there will be further interrogations.
One of the six suspects - who was taken in for questioning in Stockholm - was given a notice of suspicion after the questioning. That person had no connection to the two municipal companies, but to the case itself.
The other five - all with connections to the two municipal companies - were arrested in connection with a dawn raid on Sundsvall's municipal building on Tuesday morning.
Serious crimes
The dawn raid was carried out to secure evidence on the municipality's servers.
"Some are suspected of being an accessory to the crime and some are suspected of the crime itself. But I can't go into who is who," says Angelica Vallgren.
The criminal charge is still gross accounting fraud and gross fraud for all of them, she adds.
