The fatal accident is believed to have been caused by the police blocking the road for hundreds of fans who tried to get into the Monumental stadium for the match between Chilean Colo-Colo and Fortaleza from Brazil in the Copa Libertadores, South America's equivalent to Europe's Champions League.

The deceased supporters are said to have ended up under a fence that collapsed, according to a local prosecutor.

What we know is that one of the fences crushed these two people and an investigation is now underway to see if a police car also had a part in the deaths, says prosecutor Francisco Morales.

According to some reports, a police vehicle is said to have driven over the fallen fence while the people were still lying under it, but the matter is being investigated.

Despite the incident, the match started as planned, but was interrupted in the 70th minute after some supporters began throwing objects onto the pitch. It is unclear whether it was a protest against what happened outside the arena before the match.

While the Fortaleza players took shelter in the dressing room, the home team's players tried to calm the fans. The referee team later announced that the match would not be resumed.
