One of Tunisia's imprisoned opposition leaders, Abir Moussi, is sentenced to an additional twelve years in prison.

It is the latest in a long line of verdicts against critics of totalitarian President Kaïs Saïed.

Moussi, who is the party leader of the secular PDL and a vocal voice against both Saïed and the Islamist-inspired opposition party Ennahdha, is being punished for violating a law that criminalized all “attacks intended to change the state.”

She was first imprisoned in 2023 and has been re-convicted twice for violating a law against "fake news".

Saïed was elected in 2019 by a wide margin but has since 2021 moved sharply in an authoritarian direction and tried to stifle the opposition.

A large number of politicians and other public figures – critics of Saïed – have been sentenced to long prison terms. Several of the sentences have been identified as politically motivated by human rights groups.
