The decision on arrests is based on "four separate corruption investigations focused on Istanbul", the state news agency Anadolu reports on Saturday. It is unclear how many, and who, the arrest warrants concern.
Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested on corruption charges on the 19th of March. He is considered President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival and the arrest led to widespread protests in the city.
According to information from the TV station Halk, which is close to Imamoglu's party CHP, a total of nine out of 39 local high-ranking officials have already been arrested. Imamoglu's private secretary, as well as around 70 other employees, have also been arrested on corruption charges.
