Turkish police have arrested 47 people in the investigation against opposition leader and Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was imprisoned in March for alleged corruption, according to prosecutors in the Turkish metropolis.
The police carried out dawn raids against a total of 53 people, but 6 of them are at large, according to the prosecutors.
Imamoglu is seen as the foremost political challenger to Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of the next presidential election. His arrest on March 19 has led to widespread protests and demands for his release. It has also been criticized as politically motivated.
The wave of protests that followed is described as the country's largest in over ten years. In the wake of this, over 2,000 people – mainly students and trade union activists – have been detained.
