On May 29, it was announced that President Donald Trump's decision to partially rename the historic cultural center after himself violated the law - only Congress can decide that. The president appealed, but the appeal was rejected by a court on Friday, which also rejected Trump's plans to close the cultural center for renovation.
A thunderstorm delayed the work, but early Saturday local time workers began removing the letters of Trump's name, while about a hundred spectators cheered as the work progressed. Some of those gathered chanted "Take down the sign!" several times.
