The worst anxiety has subsided in Nuuk. Usha Vance, wife of the US Vice President, will no longer visit the city – nor Sisimiut, where the plan was for her to watch a dog sled competition.
But it's not enough for Ane Lena Fussing Rosbach to breathe a sigh of relief.
She says that several people have difficulty sleeping because they feel insecure at the thought of someone saying they want to "take over their land":
I will feel safe the day they back down from their statements. One wonders if they mean what they say, that they come to experience the culture, or if they come to check out how it is here before they invade the whole country.
Blames the Media
Politician Kuno Fencker, from Greenland's second-largest party Naleraq, believes that the anxiety many Greenlanders feel is a total exaggeration and blames the media, which he claims contribute to "whipping up the atmosphere".
Why would it be a bad thing that one of the world's largest economies and military powers has an interest in Greenland?
The widespread discontent, he sees as a direct reason for Usha Vance now only visiting the American military base in Pituffik.
I am disappointed that people have reacted so negatively and have an unfriendly attitude towards one of our allies.
But Fencker does not want Greenland to become part of the USA either. He sees opportunities in closer cooperation the day Greenland becomes independent, which he believes should happen as soon as possible.
If I were the leader of this country, I would have learned to play golf, and then I would have played golf with Trump. I would have talked to him in a friendly manner and explained that Greenland is not for sale.
"Rather Part of the USA"
That Greenland would become part of the USA is not something that Angutimmarik Berthelsen opposes. He lives in Sisimiut and had planned to welcome Usha Vance to the city.
I would rather see Greenland as part of the USA than trying to be accepted by Denmark.
According to him, about 200 residents had planned to welcome Usha Vance and at least as many had planned to demonstrate against the visit.
I think it's a shame that she's not coming. But I can also feel relieved. It's so divided around this. It would probably not have been a particularly pleasant experience for her.
