Conservative presidential candidate Nasry Asfura has been declared the winner of the presidential election in Honduras after several weeks of vote counting.

The result marks a rightward shift in yet another Latin American country, just a week after Chile elected ultra-conservative José Antonio Kast as its new president.

Ahead of the elections in Honduras, which took place on November 30, US President Donald Trump came out and supported Asfura in an aggressive move against the "narco-communists".

At the same time, a few days later, Trump decided to pardon Asfura's party colleague, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández - who had been sentenced to 45 years in prison in the United States for involvement in drug smuggling.
