The dinner was hosted by Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager. One of the high-profile guests was U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
But when he painted a picture of weak European economies in a speech compared to a booming United States, the audience began to turn, writes Bloomberg.
A commotion broke out, according to the FT's sources, when swear words were shouted at the secretary. "Some guests left while Fink appealed for calm," the Financial Times writes.
Among those who slipped out was, according to Bloomberg, Christine Lagarde, former French finance minister and now head of the European Central Bank (ECB).
