Zelensky is still ready to have a "constructive dialogue" with the USA, and can imagine signing a mineral agreement with the country, he says in an interview with BBC.
I just want the Ukrainian standpoint to be heard. We want our partners to remember who the aggressor is in this war, he says to BBC.
The statement comes after the notable verbal exchange between Zelensky, Trump, and the US Vice President JD Vance on Friday. The meeting between the leaders was intended to lead to a mineral agreement between the countries, which would secure the USA's support to Ukraine in exchange for access to, among other things, the country's minerals – but ended with Zelensky leaving the White House.
"Grateful for the USA"
After Sunday's top meeting with European leaders, Zelensky says he sees clear European support.
Everyone agrees on the main issue – for peace to become real, we need real security guarantees, says the president in a speech published on X.
He also says that Ukraine "naturally understands how important the USA is".
We are grateful for all the support we have received from the USA. There hasn't been a day when we haven't been grateful. It's gratitude for the preservation of our independence – our resilience in Ukraine is based on what our partners do for us – and for their own security.
Trump: No worry about Putin
At the same time, Donald Trump writes on social media that the USA should worry less about Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
"We should spend less time worrying about Putin, and more time worrying about immigrant rapist gangs, drug lords, murderers, and people from mental institutions who come into our country – so that we don't become like Europe!", Trump writes on his platform Truth social.
