"I informed Tim Cook (Apple's CEO) a long time ago that I expect their iPhone to be sold in the USA to be manufactured and mounted in the USA, not in India, or any other place", writes Trump in a post on his platform Truth Social.
"If that's not the case, Apple must pay a tariff to the USA of at least 25 percent", he adds.
Wants to stop Indian factory
Apple – valued at around 3,000 billion dollars on Wall Street – has not yet responded to questions about Trump's tariff threats.
The company has recently become a more frequent target in Donald Trump's campaign to get multinational corporations to move manufacturing jobs to the USA. Trump has, among other things, recently urged Apple's CEO Tim Cook to scrap plans to build new production facilities in India – an attempt by Apple to spread its production – and instead focus on getting production moved to the USA.
No iPhone production in the USA
Apple – has most of its iPhone production in China – where a network of subcontractors has been built up over many years. The IT giant does not manufacture any mobile phones at all in the USA.
In response to the attacks from Trump, Apple has promised more jobs in the USA and flagged massive investments over the coming four years.
Apple is one of the biggest losers on Wall Street this year, with a price drop of around 20 percent since the turn of the year.
