Trump wants to increase 2027 defense budget by 50 percent

U.S. President Donald Trump will propose a 2027 budget to Congress, which would increase U.S. defense spending by 50 percent to $1.5 trillion (equivalent to SEK 14,100 billion), according to a White House fact sheet.

The amount - which is equivalent to $1 trillion in 2026 - includes an additional $350 billion surcharge linked to the war in Iran.

If Trump's proposal is approved by Congress, the increase in the defense budget will be the most dramatic since World War II.

Other budget items not related to defense are being cut by 10 percent.
