Staff at the U.S. Treasury Department's Engraving and Printing Division were asked to produce prototypes for a banknote featuring Trump's portrait, The Washington Post reports.
The calls came from Treasurer Brandon Beach and his adviser Mike Brown, both political appointees at the department, ahead of the country's 250th anniversary this summer.
But Beach and Brown were told there were obstacles to producing the note and that the schedule was being disrupted. They are said to have reacted dismissively to that information, according to Treasury Department personnel.
A printing manager who opposed the proposal said she has been reassigned.
