US President Donald Trump urges his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog in a letter to "fully pardon (Prime Minister) Benjamin Netanyahu."

In the letter, Trump emphasizes that Netanyahu has been a “formidable and determined prime minister in wartime” and that he is now leading Israel into a time of peace. The accusations against him are “unfounded” and political, Trump claims.

"This morning, President Isaac Herzog received the attached letter from US President Donald Trump," Herzog's staff wrote in a press release, publishing the letter in its entirety.

But Herzog signals that if Netanyahu wants clemency, he himself must say so. "Anyone who wants presidential clemency must submit a formal request, in accordance with established rules," it says.

Netanyahu is facing three legal trials. He has been accused of fraud, bribery and breach of trust, among other things. Bribes he is suspected of receiving include gifts – including bottles of champagne and cigars.
