The statement comes after Trump spoke on the phone with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"A promise was made that the EU would fulfill its part of the deal and, as per the agreement, reduce its tariffs to zero! I agreed to give her until our country's 250th birthday, otherwise, unfortunately, EU tariffs will immediately rise to much higher levels," Trump writes on Truth Social.
EU countries and the European Parliament are still at odds over last year's trade deal with the US, which was reached by von der Leyen and Trump. There has been considerable skepticism given Trump's previous trade threats and demands to take over Greenland. Fresh threats from Trump last week to further increase tariffs on cars from the EU have not helped the situation.
Ursula von der Leyen said after the conversation with Trump that both the EU and the US are adamant that the agreement should be implemented.
“Good progress is being made towards tariff reductions in early July,” she said in a statement on X.
The deal effectively means that the EU will accept US tariffs of 15 percent on almost all European goods.
New talks will be held within the EU on May 19, in the hope of being able to agree on a common position.
