"It is not politically correct to use the term 'regime change', but if the current Iranian regime cannot MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, then there should be a regime change???" writes Trump on his own platform Truth Social.

The comment comes after the US bombed three important nuclear facilities in Iran during the night to Sunday and goes against previous American messages.

Defense Minister Pete Hegseth emphasized at a press conference earlier on Sunday that the US bombing raid is solely aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

This mission was not and has not been about regime change, said Hegseth.

Trump states in a separate post on Truth Social that the damage to the bombed nuclear facilities is "monumental", which according to the president is evident from satellite images.

"Annihilation is an accurate term", writes Trump.

"The greatest damage occurred far below ground level. Right on target!!!"

The US Department of State issued a warning on Sunday to all Americans traveling or living abroad.

"There is a risk of demonstrations against American citizens and American interests abroad", the department writes in a statement, according to AFP.

"The Department of State advises American citizens worldwide to exercise increased caution."
