The President of the USA, Donald Trump, suggests that he sees similarities between the verdict against the French far-right politician Marine Le Pen and his own legal disputes.

She was banned from running (in the presidential election) for five years and she was the leading candidate. It reminds me very much of this country, said Trump to reporters at the White House on Monday night, Swedish time.

Trump also described the verdict in France as "a very big thing".

Tammy Bruce, spokesperson at the US Department of State, said earlier on Monday that the exclusion of people from the political process is particularly concerning given "the aggressive and corrupt legal warfare directed against President Trump here in the USA".

A French court believes that Le Pen and around 20 other party representatives have used EU funds illegally.

In addition to being banned from running in elections for the next five years, Le Pen is also sentenced to prison and heavy fines for fraud with EU funds.

Of the four-year prison sentence, half is conditional. If it is enforced, she is expected to serve it with an ankle monitor, without being imprisoned.
