The two leaders have met several times before, but the meeting in Beijing in May was special, as relations between the two superpowers have been strained in several areas.
According to Trump, Xi promised that China would not supply Iran with military equipment, after reports emerged that Beijing had helped Tehran with intelligence and technology supplies. China has also been a major importer of Iranian oil.
The date for Xi's state visit was already set at the meeting in Beijing. On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi about expanded cooperation.
